FAQ
Flood insurance, explained plainly
Doesn’t my homeowners insurance cover flood?
No. Flood damage is not covered under a standard homeowners policy. Flood insurance is a separate policy.
What is the National Flood Insurance Program?
A federal program created in 1968 and managed by FEMA. Its policies are delivered through more than 47 insurance companies and NFIP Direct, and are available in more than 22,600 participating communities.
When does a policy start?
There is typically a 30-day delay before an NFIP policy takes effect, unless it is required by a government-backed lender or tied to a community flood map change. Plan ahead.
Is flood insurance required?
Homes and businesses in high-risk flood areas with mortgages from government-backed lenders are required to have it.
Is there private flood insurance?
Yes. The private flood market is small but growing, and may offer higher limits and optional coverage. Excess flood insurance is also available, but it requires NFIP coverage first.
