What it covers

Every policy is different. Your agent walks you through what yours includes before you decide.

  • Personal possessionsYour belongings, such as furniture, clothing and electronics, against fire, smoke, theft, vandalism, windstorm, water and other disasters listed in the policy.
  • LiabilityLawsuits for injury or property damage you, your family or your pets cause to other people, including the cost of defending you.
  • Additional living expensesExtra costs, such as a hotel or meals out, if a covered disaster forces you to live elsewhere while your home is repaired.

FAQ

Renters insurance, explained plainly

Doesn’t my landlord’s insurance cover me?

Your landlord’s policy may protect the building, but it won’t replace your belongings or pay your living expenses while the building is repaired.

What does renters insurance cover?

Three basic protections: your personal possessions, liability for injury or damage you cause to others, and additional living expenses if a covered disaster forces you out of your home.

Are floods and earthquakes covered?

Not by standard renters insurance. Supplemental coverage is available for them.

Actual cash value or replacement cost?

Actual cash value pays to replace your possessions minus depreciation. Replacement cost pays what it actually costs to replace them, with no deduction for depreciation, up to the policy limit.

How much coverage do I need?

Enough to replace everything you own. A home inventory, a list of your possessions and their estimated value, helps you work it out and makes a claim faster.
