FAQ

POS and payment software, explained plainly

What is a POS terminal?

A payment terminal and electronic cash register in one device that takes payments, registers and calculates transactions, and prints receipts. It may also be called a credit card machine.

What is an EMV chip?

The microprocessor on a payment card used to process transactions under the international EMV specifications. With chip and PIN, the customer enters a PIN on a chip-enabled terminal.

What is skimming?

Stealing card data from the card or from the merchant’s payment setup, for example with a device attached to a card reader. It can hit any merchant.

Who sets up a POS system?

Often an integrator or reseller, which helps with installation, configuration and support, and may also sell the devices or software.

Why does remote access matter?

Terminal vendors may use remote access to support a terminal or update its software. Weak remote access controls are one way criminals reach payment data.
