FAQ
Recurring billing, explained plainly
What does California require before an automatic renewal?
Present the renewal terms clearly and conspicuously, close to where the customer consents, and get the customer’s affirmative consent before charging their card or account.
What must the confirmation include?
An acknowledgment the customer can keep, with the renewal terms, the cancellation policy and how to cancel.
How must customers be able to cancel?
Through a toll-free number, email address, postal address or another easy method. If a customer signed up online, they must be able to cancel online, through a direct link or button or a ready-made cancellation email.
How long must I keep proof of consent?
At least three years, or one year after the contract ends, whichever is longer.
How can card details be stored for repeat charges?
Tokenization replaces the card number with a stand-in value that can be used for recurring billing and is useless to a criminal if stolen.
