FAQ

Home and auto insurance in California, explained plainly

What are California’s minimum auto liability limits?

$30,000 for injury or death to one person, $60,000 for injury or death to more than one person, and $15,000 for property damage. These higher minimums took effect January 1, 2025, under SB 1107.

Do I have to carry proof of insurance?

Yes. You must keep evidence of insurance in your vehicle at all times, and show it when law enforcement asks, when you renew your registration, and after a collision.

Does homeowners insurance cover earthquakes?

No. Homeowners, renters and condo policies do not cover earthquake damage. Fire is the exception: your homeowners policy covers fire damage even when an earthquake causes the fire.

Does my insurer have to offer earthquake coverage?

Yes. A California homeowners insurer must offer earthquake coverage in writing every other year. You have 30 days from the mailing date to accept, and if you don’t reply, the offer counts as rejected.

What is the California FAIR Plan?

A private association created by the Governor and Legislature and overseen by the California Department of Insurance, for California residents and businesses who cannot get insurance through a regular insurance company.
