FAQ
Trucking and transportation, explained plainly
Who needs a USDOT number?
Companies that run commercial vehicles hauling cargo or carrying passengers in interstate commerce must register with FMCSA and have a USDOT number. For cargo, that generally means a vehicle of 10,001 pounds or more. California is one of the states that also requires a USDOT number for intrastate carriers.
Do I need a California Motor Carrier Permit?
Generally yes if you are paid to haul property in California, whatever the vehicle size, or if you run a commercial vehicle of 10,001 pounds or more. The California DMV issues the permit, and new carriers apply before they begin operating.
What insurance proof does the DMV ask for?
Proof of liability insurance on a Certificate of Insurance (MC 65 M) from your insurance company, and proof of workers’ compensation insurance or a signed exemption. The DMV lists required liability levels from $300,000 to $5,000,000 combined single limit, depending on the vehicles and what they carry.
What is invoice factoring?
A business sells its unpaid invoices to a third party at a discount and uses the cash as working capital.
Can an SBA loan be used for equipment?
Yes. SBA 7(a) loans can be used for machinery and equipment, as well as working capital and other business needs. The maximum 7(a) loan amount is $5 million.
