FAQ

Commercial auto, explained plainly

How is commercial auto different from personal auto?

The coverage is similar, but business vehicle exposures are often more complex. A business auto policy usually uses one combined single limit instead of separate bodily injury and property damage limits.

Which vehicles can a business auto policy cover?

Business, personal, hired or non-owned autos, depending on the coverage purchased for each. Each vehicle can be listed with its own coverage.

How are vehicles classified?

By weight (light, medium, heavy and extra heavy) and by use (private passenger, service or commercial).

What limits are common?

Common combined single limits are $500,000 or $1,000,000.

I haul freight for hire. What else applies?

For-hire motor carriers also have federal filing and minimum coverage rules. Our trucking insurance page explains them.
