FAQ

General liability, explained plainly

What does general liability insurance cover?

Commercial general liability is the standard liability policy for businesses. It has three main parts: premises liability, products liability and completed operations.

What does it pay for?

Damages the business is found liable for, up to the policy limits, plus attorneys’ fees and other defense costs. It also pays medical bills of people injured by the business or on its premises.

What isn’t covered?

Major exclusions include intentional injury, liquor liability, workers’ compensation and employer’s liability, pollution, and autos. Injured employees and business vehicles are handled by workers’ compensation and commercial auto.

How do the limits work?

The policy has separate limits for different kinds of claims, and an annual aggregate limit. Once total claims reach the aggregate, the policy pays no more claims for that period. Products and completed operations have their own aggregate.

How is general liability priced?

Your business is classified by what it does, and the rating can be based on square footage, payroll or gross sales, depending on the classification.
