FAQ
Business owner’s policy, explained plainly
What is a business owner’s policy?
A BOP is a package policy designed for small businesses. It combines property coverage, general liability and business interruption (business income) coverage in one policy.
Which businesses qualify?
BOPs have strict underwriting guidelines, such as a maximum square footage. Insurers look at the size of the premises, the liability limits needed, the type of business and how much work happens off site. Small “main street” businesses, such as shops and small offices, are the usual fit.
What is business income coverage?
It compensates the owner for income lost after a disaster that disrupts operations, and covers the extra expense of operating out of a temporary location.
Can I add coverage to a BOP?
Yes. Additional coverages can be added for specific risks. For example, an outdoor sign isn’t covered unless coverage for it is added.
What affects the price of a BOP?
The size of the premises, the liability limits, the type of business and off-site activity, plus the location, the building’s construction, security features and fire hazards.
