FAQ
Supplemental health, explained plainly
What is supplemental health insurance?
Coverage that adds to a health plan, such as coverage only for accidents, coverage for a specified disease or illness, and hospital indemnity or other fixed indemnity insurance. Federal law lists these as “excepted benefits,” a separate category from comprehensive health coverage.
How does hospital indemnity pay?
It pays a fixed dollar amount, for example a set amount for each day in the hospital, regardless of your actual expenses.
Can hospital indemnity replace my health plan?
No. It is not a substitute for comprehensive coverage.
Is this Medicare Supplement?
No. This page is about coverage alongside an individual, family or job-based health plan. If you’re on Medicare or turning 65, our Medicare site is the better place to start.
