FAQ

Individual & family health, explained plainly

I’m losing my job-based coverage. Can I enroll now?

Yes. Losing job-based coverage, through a layoff or reduced hours, is a qualifying life event. Most life changes give you a 60-day window to enroll from the date of the event, and for a loss of coverage you can apply up to 60 days before it to avoid a gap.

What about when COBRA ends?

The end of COBRA coverage is also a qualifying life event, so it opens a window to enroll.

I’m self-employed. Which income do I use?

You estimate your net self-employment income for the year you’re getting coverage, not last year’s income.

What other life changes let me enroll?

A birth, adoption or foster care placement, marriage or domestic partnership, moving to a new ZIP code or to California, and aging out of a parent’s plan at 26 are among the most common.

When is open enrollment?

Open enrollment runs from November 1 to January 31. If you enroll by December 31, coverage starts January 1. If you enroll in January, coverage starts February 1.
