FAQ
ACA plans, explained plainly
What do ACA plans cover?
All Marketplace plans cover ten essential health benefits, including outpatient care, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health services, prescription drugs, lab services, preventive care and pediatric services.
Can I be turned down for a pre-existing condition?
No. A Marketplace plan can’t reject you, charge you more, or refuse to pay for essential health benefits for a condition you had before your coverage started. Once you’re enrolled, the plan can’t deny you coverage or raise your rates based only on your health.
Is there an option for younger people?
Catastrophic plans, where available, are offered to people under 30 and to people who qualify for a hardship or affordability exemption.
When can I enroll?
Open enrollment runs from November 1 to January 31. If you enroll by December 31, coverage starts January 1. If you enroll in January, coverage starts February 1. Yes, after a major life change, such as losing job-based coverage, the end of COBRA, marriage or domestic partnership, a birth or adoption, or moving to a new ZIP code. Most of these life changes give you a 60-day window to enroll.
