What it is
A benefit if death is caused by an accident.
Accidental death and dismemberment insurance pays a stated benefit if death or dismemberment is caused by an accident.
As a rider on a life insurance policy, an accidental death benefit pays an additional amount on top of the policy’s death benefit if you die from an accident. Insurance companies sometimes call these double or triple indemnity riders.
Things to know
- It pays only when the death is caused by an accident. It doesn’t pay for death from illness or natural causes.
- Check how the policy defines an accident. There are some restrictions.
- Coverage, price and approval are decided by the insurance company.

FAQ
Questions people ask
Does it pay if death is caused by an illness?
No. It pays only when the death is caused by an accident.
How is an accidental death rider different from my life insurance?
The rider adds an extra benefit on top of the policy’s death benefit, and only if you die in an accident.
Can I return a policy after I buy it?
Yes. In California a new individual life policy gives you a period to review it and return it for cancellation, between 10 and 30 days, and at least 30 days for seniors. Your policy states the exact period.
