What it is

Coverage for your entire lifetime.

Whole life insurance is designed to cover you for your entire lifetime. It’s also called straight life or ordinary life.

Premiums stay level. In the early years they’re more than the actual cost of coverage, and the extra builds a cash value that helps pay for the policy in later years.

Some policies require premiums for a set number of years. Others require them for your whole life.

Things to know

  • It costs more than term life insurance, and there’s usually little to no cash value in the first few years.
  • It stays in effect for your entire life unless you cash the policy in or stop paying premiums.
  • If a policy pays dividends, they aren’t promised and can be lower than the company’s projection.
  • Surrender charges can be substantial, so a cash value policy isn’t a good fit if you plan to give it up early.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can I borrow against the cash value?

Cash value can secure a loan at the interest rate stated in the policy. Any unpaid loan is subtracted from what’s paid at death or surrender.

What if I stop paying premiums?

The policy can end. If there’s cash value, the policy’s nonforfeiture options let you choose how that cash value is used.

Can I return a policy after I buy it?

Yes. In California a new individual life policy gives you a period to review it and return it for cancellation, between 10 and 30 days, and at least 30 days for seniors. Your policy states the exact period.
