What it is
Term coverage, with a possible refund at the end.
Return of premium is a feature of term life insurance. If you outlive the term and no death benefit was paid, it refunds part or all of the premiums you paid.
Like other term life insurance, it covers a set period of time, and the death benefit is paid only if the insured dies during the term.
Things to know
- These policies tend to cost more because of the possible refund.
- The refund can be part or all of the premiums, so it isn’t always a full refund. The policy states how it works.
- If you live beyond the term you selected, no death benefit is payable.
- Coverage, price and approval are decided by the insurance company.

FAQ
Questions people ask
What happens if I outlive the term?
If no death benefit was paid, the return of premium feature refunds part or all of the premiums you paid.
Does it cost more than regular term life insurance?
Yes. These policies tend to cost more because of the possible refund.
Can I return a policy after I buy it?
Yes. In California a new individual life policy gives you a period to review it and return it for cancellation, between 10 and 30 days, and at least 30 days for seniors. Your policy states the exact period.
